Music Videos

A distinctive art form which can allow really interesting creative opportunities  - P. Fraser 2005. As a group we have researched into the true meanings behind a music video. A music video is primarily to sell the artist and promote their product as A. Goodwin explained in 1992 - Music Video is not primarily a commodity form but a promotional one. Goodwin came up with six points about the conventions of music videos:

  • Genre characteristics
  • Visuals/lyrics
  • Visuals/music
  • Need to sell artist
  • Intertextuality
  • Voyeurism
We are now going to analyse different genres of music videos, including dance, indie, pop and classical, using Goodwin's ideas to see if music videos necessarily always stick to these typical conventions. We will also analyse mise en scene and different narrative techniques.
